CLOSING THE WELFARE GAP ON IMPORTED EGGS
29 October 2026
European Union: This report examines the scale and composition of EU imports of eggs and egg products, and the extent to which these imports come from caged hens. It analyses trade data alongside estimates of the production systems behind imports, including eggs imported in processed forms such as liquid and dried egg. Published as the European Commission prepares its forthcoming revision of animal welfare rules for laying hens and broilers, the report examines why equivalent welfare requirements for imports should cover both shell eggs and processed egg products.
The report finds:
-
Nine in Ten Imports Come from Caged Hens: Around 90% of EU egg and egg-product imports are estimated to come from caged hens, up from roughly 50% in 2021.
-
A Major Increase in Import Value: The value of EU imports of eggs and egg products increased more than eightfold between 2021 and 2025, reaching €336 million.
-
Millions of Hens Behind Processed Eggs: An estimated 24.5% of the caged hens supplying EU egg imports produce liquid and dried egg products rather than shell eggs. These products are used as ingredients in a wide range of foods.
-
A Key Consideration for Import Requirements: The report recommends that equivalent welfare requirements cover shell eggs and processed egg products, ensuring that the requirements apply consistently across different forms of imported eggs.
