Applying New Zealand’s Animal Welfare
Standards to Imported Products:

2 August 2024

The issue of animal products imported into New Zealand that do not meet domestic animal welfare standards has become an increasing concern among farmers and citizens.

Extending New Zealand’s animal welfare standards to imports would close this “welfare gap”, consistently meet Kiwi’s expectations, ensure consumption does not support inhumane production overseas, provide fairness for New Zealand farmers, and present an opportunity to strengthen New Zealand’s leadership on farmed animal welfare at home and overseas.

A key concern from officials has been whether the proposed measure would contradict rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). This review finds it is not only compliant, but that there is significant precedent.
